Metals

  • 14K = 58% pure gold (sometimes stamped with 585)
  • 18K = 75% pure gold (sometimes stamped with 750)
  • 24K = pure gold, but too soft for most jewelry.
  • Palladium: Gray-white, hypoallergenic, never tarnishes.
  • Platinum: 90–95% pure, naturally white, durable, and heavier than gold.
  • White Gold: Gold mixed with white alloys (like silver or palladium), usually 14K or 18K. Usually rhodium-plated to enhance brightness (may need re-plating over time).

Pure gold is hypoallergenic. Reactions usually come from the alloys (nickel, copper, etc.) mixed in with gold.

  • Gold-Filled: Thick bonded layer of gold, long-lasting (20+ years).
  • Gold-Plated: Very thin layer, inexpensive, wears off quickly.

About Diamonds

  • Lab-grown diamonds are graded by GIA or IGI.

By the “4 C’s”: Carat, Cut, Color, and Clarity. Cut has the most impact on sparkle.

Many diamonds are laser-engraved with a unique ID number on the girdle, viewable under magnification.
